About Me.....

As a primary teacher with over 25 years classroom experience, I’ve always been an advocate for the importance and benefits of ‘Reading For pleasure’ for our pupils.

I was definitely a bookworm from a young age and continued by choosing a degree with the rather pretentious title of ‘Literature, Life and Thought.’

My favourite part of teaching has always been ‘story time’ – an opportunity to create memories, bonds and spark imagination and empathy within young minds. I feel this is particularly important within our current tech-heavy, fast paced world.

Over the past few years, I’ve been exploring Children’s Literature further by leading an Open University Teacher Reader Group, judging the UKLA 7-11 fiction award and completing training in Biblotheraphy.

In 2024, I began exploring how to share my passion for the power of ‘Reading for pleasure’ beyond my own classroom and school setting. Thus, ‘Fully Book’d – Reading for Pleasure, Empathy and Understanding’ was conceived.

Reading Rights: Books Build a Better Future
-Book trust January 2025

“For too long, the life-changing benefits of children’s reading have not been taken seriously. And now – as our children face an unknown future – we risk losing a generation unless we act.” – Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Children’s laureate.

The Reading Framework OFSTED -Updated September2023

To nurture the reading habit, schools need a strategic approach rather than simply an eclectic mix of ‘reading for pleasure’ activities. Evaluation should take place regularly. Competitions, dressing up days and other promotional activities should be built into wider strategic activity,

Developing Reading For Pleasure, Engaging Young Readers
– Open University February 2022

Teachers intuitively know that children who enjoy reading and who read frequently, tend to do well in school; in the last decade this anecdotal knowledge has been backed-up with hard evidence from large international studies. Children who are keen readers don’t only get better at reading and writing, they develop wider vocabulary and broader knowledge about the world. Reading can also make a significant contribution to the wellbeing of every individual and society as a whole.

Testimonials

Mrs. A. came to our school to deliver her amazing RfP event. She started the day with an EYFS parental workshop. All of the parents commented how fantastic it was and how much they enjoyed the quality time with their child. A great way to attract parents into school and demonstrate the importance of ‘Reading for Pleasure.’ I know that we will want to invite Julie back into our school in future.
– Rachel Hollman (Year 1 class teacher and SENDCO, Rainford Brook Lodge Primary School)

Mrs. A. delivered a fabulous Reading for Pleasure day  in our school. The children were so engaged.  Julie worked well with each class and gave the children the opportunity to buy quality texts at such a reasonable cost. The day ran so smoothly including a well-attended parent and child session!
Thank you

– Evonne Garton- Pope,
(class teacher, St. Helens)

Having Mrs. A - The Book Lady spend a day with us, was a great, cost-effective way to raise the profile of 'Reading for Pleasure across school.
She pitched the assemblies and workshops appropriately to appeal to differing year groups. Our parents found the presentation valuable and welcomed the opportunity to work with their child on a story craft.

- Mrs. Slonecki -, (English Lead and Y3 teacher, Runcorn)

What a great way to encourage a love of reading! Julie entertained our pupils with quizzes, code-breaking and book prizes. The children came away with a memorable way to communicate the benefits of reading. Combined with the pop-up book shop and parents' workshop, we enjoyed our day with The Book lady and will be inviting her back soon.
